Sulderm is a broad-spectrum antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections like tinea cruris and tinea corporis caused by Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, and Microsporum canis, as well as tinea versicolor. Its effectiveness in treating tinea pedis (athlete's foot) has not been established. Symptom relief generally begins within a few days of starting treatment, and noticeable clinical improvement is usually seen within a week.
Sulconazole nitrate, the active ingredient in Sulderm, is an imidazole derivative that inhibits the growth of common pathogenic fungi such as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, and Microsporum canis. It also acts against the fungus responsible for tinea versicolor, Malassezia furfur, as well as certain gram-positive bacteria. Clinical testing has shown no irritation or allergic reactions to sulconazole nitrate.
Apply a small amount of the solution to the affected and surrounding skin areas once or twice daily, massaging it in gently. Symptom relief is typically experienced a few days after beginning treatment, with a visible improvement in about a week. To prevent recurrence, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and tinea versicolor should be treated for three weeks. If there is no significant improvement after four weeks, the diagnosis may need to be reconsidered.
Sulconazole nitrate should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.
In clinical trials with 370 patients using Sulderm solution, no systemic side effects were reported. A small percentage (around 1%) of patients experienced localized itching, burning, or stinging, but these reactions typically did not interfere with treatment.
